Friday AM Winter Weather

The sooner the precip arrives overnight the more likely any given location is to see snow.  And there are enough indications now that there may be a couple hours of (light) snow before the atmosphere warms and everything changes to rain for most folks.  From a line from Roxboro to Burlington to Asheboro to China Grove and west has the best shot at seeing light accumulating snow at the onset.  Here in the Triangle, again the farther west you go, the better your shot to see snow.  I expect the precip to be light thru rush hour before changing over to rain.  In the Triad, there could be some ice accruals after the change over to rain while the temps hold just at freezing for another couple hours.  Surface and low-level temps climb as the heavier rain arrives later in the afternoon and overspreads most areas.

On the backside of the storm, indications still seem to be that the upper level dynamics will be sufficient to squeeze out enough moisture into the colder air for a some light snow.  Best chances for accumulating snow are as you go farther north near the NC/VA border, but there may be a dusting to an inch in it for the northern half of NC.

Farther north from DC to PHL may be the sweet spot with this storm where some places get up more than 2 feet!  Otherwise, there will still be widespread coverage of significant snowfall totals of more than a foot in the Mid-Atlantic.  After this, we begin to watch the next in the series of storms impacting us on Tues or Wed.
